During fire-related emergencies, people over the age of 65 are more likely to die or suffer an injury during fires according to the U.S. Fire Administration. However, several measures can be taken to reduce this risk, including the four below.
1. Keep fire protection equipment in the home. People who have limited mobility should be able to easily access flame-resistant blankets and have a small fire extinguisher designed for personal use. Knowing how to use the fire extinguisher in advance of an emergency is equally important.
2. Fireproof your home. Install sprinkler systems and fire-safe compartment walls in the home to help contain a fire and reduce personal risk.
3. Keep a phone by the bed. A phone and emergency numbers should always be kept next to the bed for use during a fire-related emergency, in the event a person is unable to move and needs to call for assistance.
4. Maintain smoke alarms in all rooms and hallways of the house or apartment. Most fires occur during the nighttime, so audible or audible plus flashing alarms (if a person is hard of hearing) are key to early detection and a safe escape.
